Perforated Peptic Ulcer: “Developing” World Versus “Developed” World

Frankly, I do not believe there is anything new in this study by Lohsiriwat et al. from Thailand [1]. So why did I recommend publishing the article? The rationale for publication is to remind the reader that complicated peptic disease is far from being extinct. True, it is becoming a rarity in the developed world where whole segments of the population are being fed with H2-blockers or proton pump inhibitors (many buying it over the counter), and Helicobacter pylori is identified and eradicated with antibiotics. However, a study such as this one shows us how common and potentially lethal still are perforating peptic ulcers in the developing world. …
