A “nubbin” describes something that is small and stunted, like the pencil sharpened to the last usable length as seen in Fig. 1. This term is also used as a metaphor for the imaging appearance of a diminutive lower pole of the kidney in the setting of a duplicated collecting system. The diminutive lower pole may cause diagnostic confusion, as the nubbin may mimic a mass at imaging [1].
