Role of MIBG myocardial scintigraphy in the assessment of heart failure: the need to establish evidence

Recently, it has become apparent that the morbidity and mortality of heart failure are likely to show an upward trend, which represents a major medical challenge. The sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin system play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of heart failure. If cardiac function deteriorates, sympathetic nerve activity accelerates to compensate for the loss of function and works to maintain cardiac output. However, it has become clear that an increase in myocardial oxygen consumption and factors such as apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress and ventricular remodelling may result in exacerbation of heart failure if excessive stress on the sympathetic nerve is prolonged. …
