Brazil is a vast developing country with marked social, educational, cultural, and economical discrepancies. Current overall life-expectancy is approx. 72 years and is increasing. The elderly population (> 65 years old) estimated for the year 2020 will be 9% of the entire Brazilian population. In general, low-income patients are cared for in public hospitals, while high-income patients and those covered by health insurances are cared for in private hospitals.
