Outpatient Management of Symptomatic Ascites: Bypassing the Path of Least Resistance

Ascites is present in up to half of hospitalizations for patients with decompensated cirrhosis and/or portal hypertension [1]. Many of these hospitalizations began as emergency department (ED) visits to address symptomatic ascites. As therapeutic paracenteses are often deferred by busy ED providers [2], patients are frequently admitted to the hospital in order to obtain relief. Such hospitalizations are disruptive to the patient and caregiver, do not provide value over outpatient paracentesis, and are financially wasteful. …
