Life-threatening subcapsular renal hematoma after flexible ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy: treatment with superselective renal arterial embolization

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) is currently the first-line treatment for patients with renal stones larger than 2 cm. With the recent advances in endoscopic and holmium laser technology, flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy (FURSL) has become more and more popular to treat large renal stones, because it decreases morbidity and hospital stay with a stone-free rate, similar to that of PNL [
1]. FURSL can successfully treat patients with renal stones >2 cm with a high stone-free rate and a low complication rate [
2]. Major complications of FURSL, such as subcapsular renal hematoma (SRH) were very rare [
2]. Our department has been utilizing FURSL to treat renal stones larger than 2 cm, since 2010. We encountered a case of life-threatening SRH after FURSL. This is the case report and the reasons and management for SRH after FURSL. …
