Dr. J. Bruce Beckwith’s review of Dr. Rowena Spencer’s Conjoined Twins: Developmental Malformations and Clinical Implications (Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore, 2003) was highly critical and very biased. It is apparent from his comments that he is convinced that conjoined twins are the result of fission of a single embryonic disc and, unfortunately, goes to considerable lengths to assail Dr. Spencer’s monograph because she proposed that the etiology is fusion of 2 originally separate discs. …
