Laparoscopic management of mesenteric cysts

In their recent report of an additional case of mesenteric cyst [
1], Dequanter et al. claimed, both in the abstract appearing in the print article and in the introduction appearing only in the electronic version, that to their knowledge this was the first case to be treated by laparoscopy. Actually, Mackenzie et al. described the first case of laparoscopic excision of a mesenteric cyst in 1993 [
3]. Earlier this year (2002),
Surgical Endoscopy published another case of laparoscopic resection of a mesenteric cyst by Morrison et al. [
4]. These authors stated that to date 16 cases of laparoscopic resection of mesenteric cysts have been reported since the first description. Our personal count, based on an Internet search, is 23 cases, including three cases of cystic lymphangioma and one case of omental cyst. Of these cases, 20 were published in English, one in German, one in Italian, and one in Czech. …
