The recent article by Neumayer et al. in The New England Journal of Medicine reporting a comparison between laparoscopic mesh and open mesh inguinal hernia repairs [4] is an admirable contribution to the debate concerning these techniques, but it falls far short in its attempt to provide class I evidence for clinical therapy. Their terse conclusion as stated in both the abstract and the text, that open herniorrhaphy is superior to laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is not well supported by their own data. …
