Chronic hepatitis B is one of the most common and serious infectious diseases worldwide. Current global estimates suggest that 350 million people have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and 25 to 40% of these will develop cirrhosis, liver failure or hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV is mainly spread by perinatal transmission in areas with high prevalence (>7%) and by horizontal transmission during early childhood in areas with an intermediate prevalence (2 to 7%). …
