“A Brief Overview of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome,” by W. J. S. Hardaway (DOI: 10.1007/s00268-006-0030-), provides a unique perspective concerning the history of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as it relates to its modern treatment. This perspective is perhaps best provided by Dr. Hardaway, as he coined the term “Shock Lung” during the Vietnam War and provided one of the first descriptions of its clinical and pathological presentations. His findings were published in JAMA in 1967. During each of the decades from the 1960s to the present, Dr. Hardaway has published research showing an association between ARDS, pulmonary capillary thrombosis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). …
