Good-quality training is essential in becoming a specialist doctor. Most Spinal trainees are encouraged to do a specialist spinal fellowship thereby improving their operative skills, case selection, decision making and research. It is interesting to note that a particular spinal diagnosis can be treated differently from one region to another. This can be confusing to a young trainee, but it is important that they are exposed to many different surgical philosophies and treatment algorithms, provided these show validated improvements in patient outcome.
