The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, was awarded an R13 grant (HL0836500) from the National Institutes of Health and proudly hosted “Molecular Surgeon Symposium on Vascular Injury, Repair, and Remodeling” at the Baylor College of Medicine campus (Kleberg Auditorium) on May 15 and 16, 2006. The overall goal of this interdisciplinary scientific symposium was to bring together outstanding surgeons, physicians, and scientists from diverse fields with a common interest in understanding vascular biology and disease. Ferid Murad, MD, PhD, 1998 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine, presented his work on the role of nitric oxide in endothelial dysfunction, angiogenesis, and wound healing. Nineteen more invited speakers presented and discussed their latest advances in multiple research topics including HIV-associated vascular disorder, stem cells, vascular development, angiogenesis, thrombosis, endothelial regeneration, biomarkers, microcirculation, growth factors, vaccine, stents, lipid modification, aneurysm, tissue engineering, and nanotechnology (Table 1).
