The efficacy of intravenous glucagon in relieving acute esophageal food impaction has been questioned repeatedly in the literature. Less than a decade ago, in this journal, Maglinte [
1] raised the question of whether we should abandon pharmacologic disimpaction of lower esophageal foreign bodies. He concluded that pharmacologic disimpaction is a reasonable, efficient, safe, and cost-effective first line management of food impaction and thus should be continued. Unfortunately, data to support the usage of glucagon in food impaction remained relatively scarce and large double blind, placebo-controlled trials are still lacking. …
