Incarcerated Umbilical Hernia: A Rare Etiology of Early Bowel Obstruction After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass—A Case Report

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is the second most common weight loss surgical procedure after sleeve gastrectomy [1]. Early obstruction, which can occur up to 30 days after surgery, has been reported in 5 to 5.2% [2]. In cases where obstruction is of concern, suitable imaging and prompt operative intervention are recommended. There are many causes for small bowel obstruction after RGYB such as internal hernia, trocar site hernia, intussusception of the jejunojejunal anastomosis, adhesion bands, and kinking or narrowing of the jejunojejunostomy [2]. Ventral hernias are more prevalent in morbidly obese individuals. In addition, obese patients have more tendencies to experience incisional hernias after any surgical procedure [3]. Early small bowel obstruction after RYGB due to an umbilical hernia is rarely reported. …
