There are many anesthetic hazards of major operations, some of which may be fatal and others may leave the patient with terminal disability. Unintentional intra-arterial (IA) injection of medications can lead to clinically important sequelae, including paresthesias, severe pain, motor dysfunction, compartment syndrome, gangrene, and limb loss.
