A 61 year-old man was noted to be forgetful and intermittently confused. His affect was blunt. The remainder of his neurological examination was normal. Work-up revealed a large cystic tumor in the left frontal white matter containing an enhancing mural nodule. A gross total resection was performed. Histopathological examination revealed anaplastic ependymoma containing a few foci of endothelial proliferation. The tumor displayed a high mitotic count (up to 26 mitoses per 10 high power fields). Neoplastic cells expressed glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) but did not stain for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). The proliferative index (MiB1 labeling) was 25%. Adjuvant radiation therapy was provided. …
