Hypernatremia is a common medical complication in neurointensive care that is associated with worse outcome. It can be caused by water diuresis due to anti-diuretic hormone insufficiency in central diabetes insipidus (cDI) or from different mechanisms: osmotherapy, furosemide or renal failure.
