Human Milk Banks and their Relevance in India

To the Editor: Human Milk Bank (HMB) is a service which collects, screens, processes, stores and distributes donated breast milk to infants who are not breast fed by their biological mothers. In 1909, first HMB was established in Vienna. In 1985, Human Milk Banking Association (HMBANA) was established which laid standards for setting up HMB. The number of HMB presently functioning in different countries are France (18 HMB), United Kingdom (17 HMB), Canada and United States (14 HMB) [1]. In India, first HMB was established in Mumbai in 1989. Till now, 25 HMBs are functional in the country, situated mainly in Maharashtra and Gujarat [2]. …
