In their textbook Principles of Counseling and Psychotherapy: Learning the Essential Domains and Nonlinear Thinking of Master Practitioners, Mozdzierz, Peluso, and Lisiecki provide timely insights for growth among practitioners of all theoretical orientations and at all stages of professional development. The authors de-mystify the nonlinear thinking of master therapists that enables them to connect and intervene effectively with clients in ways that often seem elegant and even “magical.” In contrast to linear thinking that leads to a logical, one-dimensional, common-sense, straight-forward approach, the nonlinear thinking of master practitioners often “turns things upside down and inside out” in a way that creates and communicates a whole new vision and opportunity for the client. The authors assert that the nonlinear thinking processes of master therapists can and should be taught at the earliest stages of professional development. Throughout the textbook, numerous clinical exercises, case examples, and supplementary information related to neuroscience and cultural issues highlight their main points. …
