Gender and education inequalities in the cost of medication-overuse headache

The evaluation of the costs of headache disorders has been traditionally performed with a top-down approach by which, on the basis of pre-defined structures of cost, reasonable estimates are calculated. The most prominent example of such an approach is the EUROLIGHT project, a population study specifically aimed to address the cost of headache disorders [1]: according to EUROLIGHT, the cost of medication-overuse headache (MOH) per patient in Europe is estimated at 3561 €/year (around 6000 €/year for Italy). However, as previously shown [2], the assumptions used to produce the estimates do not seem to fit for those conditions characterized by high frequency, such as MOH, and these assumption have an impact on all categories cost. …
