With the improvement in therapy regimens and surgical technique, the number of esophagectomies performed has grown substantially.
1 Outcomes of patients has therefore become increasingly related to surgical outcomes in addition to the process of disease. Anastomotic leak (leak) remains a source of significant morbidity and accounts for approximately 40% of postoperative mortality after esophagectomy.
