Fascial plane blocks: moving from the expansionist to the reductionist era

As even a casual observer will have noticed, fascial plane blocks have exploded in both popularity and number over the last several years. The realization that local anesthetic (LA) does not need to be delivered immediately adjacent to target nerves has been revolutionary for regional anesthesia. Instead, large volumes can spread along fascial planes to provide analgesia by either coming in contact with multiple nerves, diffusion through fascia into adjacent tissues, or by vascular absorption.
