A 25-year-old pregnant woman presented at 37 weeks gestation with worsening respiratory distress. A diagnosis of influenza A (H1N1) pneumonitis with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was established. Following tracheal intubation, emergency Cesarean section, and delivery of a healthy baby boy, she developed progressive, severe respiratory failure with a PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 50.
