Expect the unexpected: primary breast MALT lymphoma

In December 2005, a 77-year-old patient attended a diagnostic mammogram for a left mastodynia. Clinical examination was normal. The mammogram revealed a suspect 20 mm lesion in the upper-outer left para areolar region with no calcifications. As the core biopsy was not conclusive, excision biopsy was recommended. She underwent left lumpectomy with clear margins. Definitive histopathology was mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the breast. …
