Endoscopic resection (ER) is widely accepted for the treatment of early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Although ER is performed with curative intent, curative ER is not always possible. ER of an early ESCC can be noncurative when pejorative histopathological factors indicate a risk of nodal involvement (presence of submucosal invasion, lymphovascular invasion [LVI], and poor tumor differentiation) and incomplete resection (presence of positive resection margins). Currently, additional esophagectomy is the standard therapy after ER with noncurative factors, but the outcomes and beneficiaries of additional surgery remain unclear.
