Supposedly, postoperative morbidity can deteriorate prognosis after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Various prophylaxes, such as nutritional support, prehabilitation, and oral hygiene, may be effective in reducing postoperative morbidity. However, studies on whether such precautions can improve prognosis were unavailable.1 Preoperative smoking cessation is a key prophylaxis to reduce postoperative morbidities in both open and minimally invasive esophagectomies.2,3 Whether smoking cessation can contribute to improving prognosis after esophagectomy is unclear due to the absence of a study with reliable databases covering the preoperative cessation period. …
