Following years of persistent underfunding and inadequate health infrastructure development, the health system in Ghana is weak and unable to provide for the general and specific health care needs of the people [1]. In addition, due to the considerable morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and malnutrition, as well as the lack of trained surgeons, the acute and chronic surgical needs of many people remain unsatisfied [2]. The effects of the weak health system and the lack of trained surgeons are more manifest in the rural communities of northern Ghana, where levels of education and economic activity are very low [3]. …
