Happy New Year to all our readers! We hope you started 2004 well and full of new ideas. This editorial is rather unusual, coming not only from the Editor-in-Chief but also from the publisher. The use of computers has become a fact of life at home and at work, and the work of the editorial offices of science journals has not been spared this change. Accordingly, Springer-Verlag, the publisher, and the Journal have decided to take up this contemporary challenge and introduce a computer-based manuscript tracking system. We are happy to announce that this change has now been completed. …
