The co-occurrence of mental disorders and substance use problems is common, yet there is little guidance to direct clinical practice with people who suffer from more than one of these disorders. The increased reporting of comorbidity between mental disorders and substance use related problems in the literature, however, illustrates that the issue has attracted the attention of research and treatment communities who are interested in examining the detrimental impact of this association on individuals and communities. We are learning that those who suffer from the co-occurrence of mental disorders and substance use problems tend to exhibit worse treatment and recovery outcome compared to those who suffer exclusively from a mental disorder or substance use related problem. …
