Echocardiography, which originally consisted solely of M-mode one-dimensional ultrasound, has since evolved into two-dimensional imaging and the more complex three-dimensional color Doppler method and transesophageal echocardiography. Valvular heart disease, which in the past was mainly caused by rheumatic mitral stenosis, has seen a shift to degenerative aortic valve stenosis and degenerative or ischemic mitral regurgitation. Furthermore, the treatment for valvular heart disease is gradually changing from surgical valve replacement to valvuloplasty, and percutaneous approaches are also increasingly adopted. Thus, the application of echocardiography for valvular heart disease should reflect these advances and changes. This textbook uses images from actual examples to help explain various indices and their basic concept in relation to valvular heart disease echocardiography. …
