In his booklet on the kingdom of the two Sicilies, Alexandre Dumas wrote that..... “Towards the end of the last century (XVIII) Naples could boast three or four outstanding physicians, while Rome could pride itself on none. The most famous practitioner was Domenico Cotugno, a man of immense erudition who, in addition to his medical prowess, was noticeably proficient in both Greek and Latin literature and a theatre and poetry enthusiast.... He never accepted remuneration from anyone who consulted him at his home.... At the age of 23 he discovered the fluid contained in the ear and at 30 had written one of the best Italian works on sciatica...”. …
