Early life exposures have been implicated in the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Vitamin D has immunomodulatory effects with implications as an etiologic and therapeutic factor in several autoimmune diseases including SLE and RA.
