Deltoid ligament and syndesmotic injury of the ankle without fibular fracture: a treatment summary report

Up to 18 % of ankle sprains are associated with deltoid ligament and syndesmotic injury [8]. However, ankle diastasis without fibular fracture is rarely reported in literature and mostly in athletes [3, 4]. This injury usually occurs with forced pronation-abduction or pronation and eversion of the foot, leading to external rotation or abduction in the ankle. Early diagnosis and proper surgical anatomic reduction are very important to prevent chronic ankle instability and evolution towards ankle arthritis. …
