Patients without evident symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) may present minimal HE (MHE), characterized by mild cognitive impairment, attention deficits, psychomotor slowing and impaired visuomotor and bimanual coordination. These non-evident symptoms can be revealed using psychometric tests (Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score, PHES). The use of PHES to diagnose MHE soon led to the realization of its high incidence, affecting 33–50 % of cirrhotic patients (Felipo et al. 2012; Felipo 2013). …
