Complementary and alternative medicine in anesthesia: Are we really going there?

In this issue of the Journal, Woodbury et al. 1 provide a narrative review outlining the expansive variety of options in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used by patients, many of whom eventually present for surgery or for other anesthesia-related interactions (e.g., acute or chronic pain therapy). Many readers may question the validity and/or the need for such an article in the Journal, perhaps citing the relatively incomplete science surrounding these CAM therapies. In view of that, I thought that a brief note explaining the rationale and “backstory” for such an article would be in order. …
