I enjoyed reading this paper very much indeed, and I agree completely with the philosophy, which has been presented by the authors. The amazing thing to me is that people are afraid of dissecting out the facial nerve. For some reason, we have the concept that the nerve is difficult to dissect because of how it traverses the gland. This is a total misconception. The nerve consistently remains in the same plane in the gland. Therefore, if it is picked up in the preauricular area, there is no difficulty in dissecting it out; it only takes a few minutes to do so. It is almost impossible to injure the nerve if one understands this anatomical situation. …
