In this prospective multicenter trial 365 patients with groin hernias were randomly assigned to three methods of open repair (Bassini, Shouldice, Lichtenstein) and two methods of laparoscopic repair (TAPP, and TEP). Patients were followed with physical examination at one, two, and three years postoperatively. The authors found no significant differences in recurrence or complication rates between the five groups. They also concluded that specialization was necessary for laparoscopic but not for open methods of repair. …
