Beard et al. [1] describe a very useful method for estimating the hernia incidence, prevalence, Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), and cost of repair in Ghana. This study is particularly timely as hernia repair has been covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which is facing several obstacles to financial sustainability. The cost and DALY estimates drawn from Shillcutt et al. [2] represent a starting point for basing calculations; however, several limitations both of the data and how it is used should be noted. …
