With the availability of antiretroviral therapy in the last 20 years, the expected life span of persons living with HIV is now comparable to those living with any other chronic illness. Yet, high levels of adherence to antiretroviral therapy are necessary to ensure favourable treatment outcomes such as a supressed viral load, slower disease progression, fewer opportunistic infections and decreased mortality rates [
1]. In recent years, various barriers to optimal adherence have been identified, including symptoms of depression [

5]. The article by Cruess et al. on the relationships among depressive symptoms, adherence to psychotropic medications and antiretroviral adherence is therefore both important and timely [
