After the initial “run” on the fast-track concept and its successful implementation in the beginning of this millennium, it appears that the introduction as well as the concepts' further extension on more than elective colonic surgery is stagnating now. Meanwhile, modern perioperative medicine is commonly accepted and absurd ritual therapy forms without evidence are antiquated nowadays. However, the present study of Hasenberg et al. suggests an enormous demand of improvement in the field of perioperative medicine especially in rectal surgery. …
