The CD-ROM, Membranes and Filters for Hemodialysis—Database 2004 compiled by Ronco et al., is a comprehensive interactive database program that helps the nephrologist optimize a hemodialysis or hemodiafiltration prescription. All filters available in Europe, North America, and Japan are included in the database for comparison. The user can proceed down one of two general paths to select a dialyzer appropriate for the particular clinical situation. The first option allows the user to input the desired dialyzer characteristics, including membrane composition, membrane thickness, membrane surface area, sterilization method, manufacturer, KoA (urea, creatinine, phosphorus, vitamin B12 all in ml/min), and/or “usage” (hemodialysis vs. high-flux dialysis/hemodiafiltration). The database returns the available dialyzers based on the input for each field entered with a ±20% range for the clearance fields. Double-clicking on one of the displayed dialyzers leads to an expanded information screen with detailed information about the chosen dialyzer. One can also proceed on to the Simulator, in which the user inputs specifics regarding a hemodialysis treatment to lead to a calculated single-pool Kt/V. …
