To commemorate the history of CIRSE, we need to take a short look at the developments in European interventional radiology before CIRSE was created in the spring of 1985. Until then, two “interventional societies” existed in Europe: the European College of Angiography (ECA) and the European Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (ESCVIR), which were both founded in 1976. The idea of gathering European cardiovascular and interventional radiologists into a scientific society was conceived in the early 1970s. By 1975 numerous prominent European cardiovascular and interventional radiologists had started serious discussions, which resulted in the creation of the two European bodies. …
