Changing the Metabolic Profile by Large-Volume Liposuction: A Clinical Study Conducted with 123 Obese Women

I read the study of Dr. D’Andrea’s and colleagues on changing metabolic profiles after large-volume liposuction (LVL) with excitement and trepidation given the recent publication of seemingly contrary data (Klein et al.). This study included a large group of otherwise healthy obese women. The authors amassed a cohesive group using proper exclusion criteria, with all blood work measured in the follicular stage of the menstrual cycles. Their study supercedes the shortcomings of all previous studies and firmly establishes the positive effect of large-volume liposuction on the cardiovascular risk profile for this particular group of women. The treatment group was markedly similar to mine. Four of five previous studies show improvement in the metabolic profiles after LVL for nonobese to mildly obese women. However, truth and credibility was questioned because of the relatively low sample size, methods of blood work analysis, and disparity of the subjects’ constitution. …
