The word pathology originates from pathos (suffering) and logos (study), and it accurately describes our discipline. However, the word pathos has more meanings, e.g., the intensity of feelings, the burning fire of emotions, compassion. All these, along with a chain of logical reasoning, also accurately describe our everyday practice of Pathology, and are experienced particularly in the process of frozen section diagnosis. Susan C. Lester describes the feelings that accompany this particular situation in the Preface and the Dedication of the 2nd edition of Intraoperative Consultation, a book of the established Diagnostic Pathology series. The specimen along with the request for frozen section diagnosis arrives at the Pathology laboratory and the work does not stop until the diagnosis is communicated to the surgeon and all specifics are discussed and clearly understood. …
