Paul O’Brien is a leader of bariatric surgery in Australia and, through his teaching and research, he has influenced bariatric surgery—particularly related to gastric banding—across many parts of the world. It is fair to say that he is one of the most successful and prominent band surgeons. Although he began practicing across a very broad surgical base, he has spent most of his clinical and research career in upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery and now exclusively researches and treats obesity.
