“Banding” esophagus: circumferential bruising due to ligature neck constriction or circumferential hypostasis due to rapid death?

We have recently read the article “Remarkable findings in suicidal hanging” by Tattoli et al. [
1] which has been received with great interest. Especially interesting was the case of free suspension of an 84-year-old male, where “external examination revealed a deep furrow with a loop below the laryngeal protuberance”, and “the inner surface of the esophagus revealed a circumferential bruising strand below the upper sphincter of the esophagus”. The gross appearance of the esophagus in the figure showed “a purple-red 2 cm wide band of bruising”. The authors considered that “such hemorrhage can be… occurring
intra vitam due to the forceful constriction of the neck by the rope”. Unfortunately, this finding was not demonstrated microscopically. …
