Excerpt

The December 2021 issue of the IUJ featured an editorial by Dr. Steven Swift. In the editorial, Dr. Swift identifies the complicated role of terminology documents created by alliances between any number of contributing professional organizations in academic and clinical urogynecology. The piece tracks the progress of terminology documents in urogynecology since the sentinel paper by Haylen et al. in 2010, “International Urogynecologic Association (IUGA)/International Continence Society (ICS) joint report on the terminology for female pelvic floor dysfunction from 2010.” Specifically, he identifies that 11 more of these documents have been published and raises important questions about the value and stewardship of these documents that remain unanswered. Specifically:
  • Have we diminished the value of our terminology documents by creating too many of them?
  • Are we using the documents as they were intended?
  • How can we maintain our collective “library” of terminology documents, ensuring that we regularly update the ones we use and retire the ones we don’t?
