Diagnosing Appendicitis on the Basis of Clinical Prediction Rules: Are We There Yet?

Appendicitis is the most common reason for abdominal surgery in children [1, 2]. Despite being so common, the diagnosis of appendicitis is challenging and is often delayed because the initial symptoms can be often nonspecific. In a case-controlled study from five pediatric emergency departments, it was found that 63% children had a delay in diagnosis because of an incorrect diagnosis at their first visit to a healthcare facility [3]. These delays in diagnosis are associated with worse outcomes. …
