Anemia affects about one-third of the world population with deleterious clinical and economic impact [
1]. In our geographical area it is estimated that more than a half of the cases of anemia are due to iron deficiency (ID) [
2]. The prevalence of anemia and ID is higher in children, women in childbearing age, pregnancy, and elderly subjects, especially those affected by chronic disorders and multimorbidity [
3,
4]. Whatever the cause, ID and anemia can negatively affect various outcomes [
5], such as school and working performances, mood, course of pregnancy [
6], and prognosis, such as mortality and hospitalizations, in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) [
7], chronic kidney disease (CKD) [
8], cancer [
9], and in the surgical setting [
10]. International guidelines highlight the potential benefits of iron supplementation in CHF, CKD and cancer [
